Overview

Wadhurst Castle began as a medieval farmhouse known as Maplehurst.

In the early 1800s, James Louis West replaced it with a castellated mansion, laying the foundation for the present estate. During the 19th century, successive owners expanded and remodelled the house and landscaped the grounds, giving the castle its characteristic Gothic Revival appearance.

The 20th century saw parts of the estate sold, a major fire in 1933, and the castle’s use by the Canadian Army during World War II. After the war, restoration continued. The Fitzgerald family purchased the property in 1955, and it remains in private ownership. Today, Wadhurst Castle is a restored Grade II listed building set within historic gardens, used for private events and functions.
